Hokies’ NCAA tournament bubble already has burst

If you thought Virginia Tech (11-6, 0-3 ACC) hit rock-bottom with its 61-59 loss to a Boston College team with a losing record and five freshman starters, consider what lies ahead. On Thursday night, the Hokies face No. 8 North Carolina, which figures to be motivated after a humiliating 90-57 loss to Florida State. On Sunday, Virginia Tech travels to No. 15 Virginia.

After drawing NIT bids each of the last four seasons despite winning 87 games, the upside this year for coach Seth Greenberg is that there isn’t likely to be any NCAA bubble angst this March.

“It’s not gloom and doom around here,” Greenberg said Monday. “If we were getting whacked by 30 and 40, no matter who we were playing, I could see that. But we have a lot of positive things going on.”

Finding positives, however, after losing ACC games in which they surrendered 58, 63 and 61 points is difficult.

“We’ve always had these young teams that always had one really high-energy player,” Greenberg said. “We don’t have that high-energy guy to set the tone right now.”
