Several Saturday Night Live regulars and former cast members returned to the program to tackle the latest Democratic primary debate and President Trump’s impeachment.
During this weekend’s star-studded episode, the cold open lampooned Thursday’s debate, during which the real-life candidates argued about wine caves.
“I haven’t been to a wine cave. I haven’t even been to a Filene’s Basement,” Kate McKinnon, playing Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, said.
“My candidacy will be completely ignored by the media, which is why I’ll conduct the rest of the debate in virtual reality,” Bowen Yang said as Andrew Yang.
“Tonight, I will be in attack mode … so long as that’s okay with everyone else,” Colin Jost’s South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg declared.
Additionally, Rachel Dratch made a cameo as Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Larry David joined as Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Jason Sudeikis returned as Joe Biden. Despite his not qualifying for the debate, Fred Armisen showed up to play Michael Bloomberg. Maya Rudolph also made a cameo as California Sen. Kamala Harris, who has already dropped out of the race.
At one point in the skit, Alec Baldwin reprised his role as Trump, interrupting the debate to poke fun at the candidates and to say he’s not afraid of anything. McKinnon then reappeared as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“Good luck at the State of the Union,” she said, imitating Pelosi’s exaggerated clap at the last event.
Saturday Night Live‘s final episode of 2019 came after 2020 Democrats battled it out on the debate stage in Los Angeles earlier in the week. It also followed Trump’s becoming the third president in U.S. history to be impeached by the House.
