A deadly school shooting by a swastika-wearing gunman in Izhevsk, Russia, has left 15 people dead, including 11 children, according to Russian officials.
The shooter has been identified as Artyom Kazantsev, 34, a former pupil who was suffering from schizophrenia, the Russian Duma’s investigative committee reported, according to RIA Novosti. The investigative committee added that the shooter was dressed in a black t-shirt painted with “Nazi symbols,” wearing a balaclava, and had “hate” written on his weapons’ magazines, Russian state media outlet TASS reported. He used two modified handguns, which originally fired blanks but were modified to fire live ammunition. Videos on social media showed police evacuating children from the building.

“As a result of the crime, 39 people were injured, 15 of them died, including 11 children and 4 adults. 24 victims were injured, including 22 children and 2 adults,” officials told RIA Novosti. An emergency Il-76 transportation flight equipped with special medical modules was dispatched to fly some of the most serious of the victims to Moscow for emergency treatment.
Released pictures of the shooter’s magazines apparently back up the investigative committee’s finding that they had “hate” written on them in red.
