Hearing offers concerned senators opportunity to ‘delve deeper’ into Graham-Cassidy healthcare proposal

Senate Committee on Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, appeared to address concerns expressed by fellow Republican Sen. John McCain over the Graham-Cassidy healthcare reform proposal in a statement announcing the witnesses for an upcoming hearing on the issue.

“Senators have expressed a strong desire to examine the details of the Graham-Cassidy proposal through a public hearing,” Hatch said on Saturday. “A hearing will allow members on both sides of the aisle to delve deeper into its policy and gain a better understanding of what the authors hope to achieve.”

The Monday hearing, officially entitled, “Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson Proposal” will include testimony from Sens. Bill Cassidy, one of the co-authors of the amendment, former Sen. Rick Santorum, and state healthcare officials.

McCain, R-Ariz. after revealing he was going to vote “no” on the Graham-Cassidy proposal, said in a statement that he would consider similar legislation following hearings and debates.

“I would consider supporting legislation similar to that offered by my friends Senators Graham and Cassidy were it the product of extensive hearings, debate and amendment. But that has not been the case,” McCain said.

McCain also expressed hope for a bipartisan solution.

“I believe we could do better working together, Republicans and Democrats, and have not yet really tried,” he added.
