Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin gets first look at new $1 bills with his signature

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Treasurer Jovita Carranza got a first look at the first new $1 bills to feature their signatures at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on Wednesday.

The new bills will be shipped to regional Federal Reserve banks around the country and go into circulation in December.

The Associated Press reported that Mnuchin and Carranza each provided 10 sample signatures for government engravers to choose from for the new bills.

Mnuchin was also accompanied on the tour by his wife, Louise Linton. Linton became embroiled in controversy in August after going on an Instagram tirade about how she and her husband had sacrificed more for the country because of their wealth.

Mnuchin did not discuss during the tour whether the Trump administration will overturn an Obama administration decision to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman. In August, Mnuchin said the change was “not something we’re focused on.” During the 2016 presidential campaign, President Trump said Obama’s decision was motivated by “pure political correctness.”
