Feds: MS-13 members fled after cutting man with machete

Federal authorities say three MS-13 members have been on the run for nearly a year after brutally slashing a man in Manassas with a machete.

Now, the three are charged in federal court in Alexandria with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for allegedly fleeing Virginia after the August 2010 attack.

The attack happened near Town Lane and Taney Road in the Georgetown South area at about 11:15 p.m. on Aug. 26, according to Manassas police.

Authorities say 21-year-old Jose Rubio Nativi, 23-year-old Jimmy Israel Rubio Nativi and 19-year-old Francis A. Bonilla Sosa attacked a man with baseball bats and a machete.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was comatose for about two weeks, but survived the attack, court records say. He belonged to a rival gang, the Surenos, also known as SUR-13, according to court documents.

Warrants were issued for the three men within a few days of the attack, charging them with aggravated malicious wounding and gang participation.

But Manassas police, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Northern Virginia Gang Task Force haven’t been able to find them.

Prosecutors say that all three plotted to leave the area after the attack to avoid being arrested. The federal flight charges were filed last week.

Jimmy Rubio Nativi is believed to have traveled to El Salvador, according to court documents. Bonilla Sosa is thought to have fled to North Carolina, where he has relatives, according to an affidavit filed in support of the warrant for his arrest. Jose Rubio Nativi allegedly told people he was leaving the area to avoid arrest, but court papers don’t specify where investigators believe he went.

Police described Jose Rubio Nativi, who also goes by “Kiko,” as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 160 pounds. Jimmy Rubio Nativi, also known as “Mata Gata,” is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and 150 pounds. Bonilla Sosa, known as “Chino,” is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and 185 pounds.
