Ohio Gov. John Kasich claimed Tuesday night that he’s the best-positioned candidate to win November’s general election, after winning his first state in the 2016 GOP primary.
“I am so appreciative to the people of Ohio,” Kasich told CNN on Tuesday. “That is my third straight statewide win, and we’ve got one more to go. We’ll have one more to go this fall where we beat Hillary Clinton because I’m in the best position to beat her and we’re going to get a lot of momentum.”
The Kasich campaign released a memo late on Tuesday detailing the governor’s path to the nomination that it believes runs through a contested convention. No candidate, the Kasich campaign said, will win enough delegates to earn the nomination.
Kasich’s “positive message and proven record can overcome the Donald Trump insult machine,” wrote John Weaver, Kasich’s chief strategist. “With a narrowing field, Gov. Kasich is the candidate best positioned to go toe-to-toe in the remaining states.”
The governor has still earned fewer victories than Sen. Marco Rubio, who quit the 2016 race after losing his home state of Florida on Tuesday. But Kasich said he believes he has momentum after winning his home state, which awards delegates on a winner-take-all basis.
