Discovery school has yet to open

Students of the Imagine Discovery Public Charter School are getting an extra day to enjoy the summer.

Baltimore County’s first public charter school is closed today — the first day of school in the county — due to a “facilities issue,” Baltimore County Public Schools officials said.

Charles Herndon, the school system’s spokesman, deferred questions to the principal, Sharon Harris, who could not be reached Sunday.

The 415-seat school in Woodlawn, located on Whitehead Road only offers kindergarten through fourth grade, and has already drawn criticism from local lawmakers who say most of the new student body comprises former private schoolers.
