Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner and his Republican challenger Ed Gillespie met Monday morning in Northern Virginia to discuss the challenges facing the technology industry.
Warner, an early investor in the cellphone giant Nextel, stressed the dangers of cybersecurity and data breaches following the most recent nationwide breach of Home Depot’s credit machines. He said retail giants need to work with the financial sector to contain these breaches and that it’s not necessarily the government’s responsibility to step in at this time.
Gillespie talked about the need for a check-and-balance system when it comes to government surveillance, however he added following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks the United States government has surveyed Americans too much.
