Director Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, Django Unchained, has no shortage of foul language, violence and, of course, controversy.
Director Spike Lee called it’s depiction of slavery “disrespectful,” and some have asked whether it’s the “most controversial film of 2012.” People’s Alynda Wheat, thought the first hour of the movie was “brilliant,” but did not appreciate the use of the N word throughout the film–114 uses according to her count.
Distributors of the violent film also canceled the premier and uninvited press in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Conn.
So has the minefield of contention scared off movie-goers? Not quite.
Despite its silver medal finish to The Hobbit over the weekend, Django is on track to out-earn Inglorious Basterds as Tarantino’s highest grossing movie ever, which earned $120.5 million. Released on the the Christmas Day, Django brought in a six day haul of $60 million, thanks in part to a $27 million bump over the weekend.
Sorry, Tarantino critics. It doesn’t look like the filmmaker will be retiring anytime soon.
