Man suspected in series of Fairfax burglaries

Police say a man arrested after a break-in at a Reston-area home this weekend may have committed more than 20 burglaries around Fairfax County this spring.

Fairfax police said 20-year-old Jamil Alam, of Sterling, was arrested at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday after he allegedly committed two burglaries in the Monroe Manor community.

Police said Wednesday that investigators are determining whether Alam is responsible for other garage break-ins. Authorities believe the string of burglaries began in mid-March.

People have reported that someone broke into garages, stole items from unlocked cars and entered homes through unlocked doors. Items taken have included electronic devices, alcohol, purses and wallets.

Alam has been charged with burglary, grand larceny, attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools. Police said additional charges are expected.
