McDonnell veto on mandatory PE stands

RICHMOND – The Virginia state Senate on Wednesday failed to override Gov. Bob McDonnell’s veto on a bill that would have required an average of 150 minutes per week of physical education per week for K-8 students starting in 2014.

McDonnell said that while the goals of the bill were laudable, the measure signified an unfunded mandate on localities and could cut into classroom time for other subjects.

Legislators need a two-thirds majority to override gubernatorial vetoes. The bid to overturn it failed on a 16-24 vote.
