Congressional Black Caucus members to push Facebook, Uber on diversity

Two members of the Congressional Black Caucus will travel to Silicon Valley next week to call for Uber, Facebook, and other tech companies to increase the diversity of their workforces.

Reps. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., and G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., will tell tech companies they haven’t moved quickly enough to hire black engineers and executives, Recode reported.

“They have got to understand, they’ve got to move quicker,” Lee said.

The trip is a part of the Congressional Black Caucus’ Tech2020 campaign, intended to increase black representation in tech industry jobs.

Lee said they will address concerns about racist content that’s shared on Facebook and Twitter, in the midst of intense scrutiny for both companies about how Russian agents were able to take advantage of the platforms during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“They’ve got to figure out a way to stop allowing these ads that really undermine our elections and create havoc, really, in communities by trying to create division and hostility and hatred,” Lee said.
