President Trump’s lying could mean trouble for the U.S. down the road if the United States goes to war or needs to negotiate with other countries, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., charged Wednesday.
The former leader of the Democratic National Committee said Trump’s willingness to lie about the crowd size at his inauguration and claiming millions of votes were cast illegally in the election are a dire sign.
“If he’s willing to lie about the trivial, like crowd size, or the serious, like voter fraud, then what if God forbid we go to war?” she said on CNN. “And we’ve got troops’ lives on the line and there are casualties?”
“Is he going to send Sean Spicer out to lie about the casualties that have taken place?” she asked. “Are our allies going to be able to trust us? How are we going to sit across the table from other countries and negotiate and not be trusted, because they lie every day willingly?”
She said Trump’s plans to launch a “major investigation” into voter fraud for which he’s presented to no proof is casting doubt on the legitimacy of his own election.
She said Trump has spent the last two months slamming critics of his election win when it comes to Russian hacking of the DNC and other top Democrats, calling such criticism an attempt to undermine his legitimacy. However, by claiming millions voted illegally, he’s calling the election result into question himself.
“He seems to be questioning the legitimacy of his own election, all while touting for the last couple months how legitimate and how huge his election was and how historic it is,” she said. “It can’t be both.”
