The last time Jonathan Sanderson saw his childhood buddy, 1st Lt. John Ryan Dennison, it was over beers in August, about three weeks before the 2004 West Point graduate was scheduled to ship off to Iraq.

Sanderson learned late Wednesday that Dennison, 24, was killed after being shot twice in Balad, a city about 50 miles north of Baghdad.
