The Redskins remained busy, signing ex-Pittsburgh backup linebacker Keyaron Fox, Saturday night. He’s a seven-year veteran who spent the last three years witht he Steelers after starting his career with Kansas City.
Fox was a backup inside linebacker with Pittsburgh and is therefore familiar with what the Redskins want to do defensively, too. Redskins linebackers coach Lou Spanos coached Fox for two seasons.
But special teams is where Fox stood out in Pittsburgh. He was the Steelers’ special teams captain in 2009 and 2010, though he committed seven penalties in this area last season.
It’s uncertain if he’s a serious threat to start or not or if he’s just more depth. The Redskins re-signed Rocky McIntosh last week to a one-year deal. McIntosh struggled as a 3-4 inside linebacker last season, playing it for the first time. However, the Redskins brought in Lofa Tatupu last week — a visit scheduled before McIntosh signed — and he left unsigned, with one team source saying it was because McIntosh was back.
And Fox has only started seven games in his career. He started three games for Pittsburgh two years ago, recording a combined 24 tackles in those starts. But his highlight came in a non-start when he picked off Brett Favre and returned it 82 yards for a score. According to Steelers Digest, Fox played less than 60 snaps from scrimmage last season, backing up standouts James Farrior and Lawrence Timmons.
Here’s a good look at the Redskins newest player.
