?Tiny? contributions equal big results for Bears

Morgan State point guard Corin Adams has no link to the Bears? past. And that is probably a good thing.

The freshman wasn?t at Morgan State last season when it limped to a 5-23 record under then-first year coach Donald Beasley. She came to the Baltimore school this fall with a clean slate, ready to make the Bears a contender in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. And so far, Adams, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., has done just that.

Despite having its five-game winning streak snapped Monday with a 69-62 loss to North Carolina A&T, Morgan State (9-7 overall, 4-3 MEAC) is off to its best start in a decade. The Bears are hoping to kick off a new winning streak Saturday when they host Maryland-Eastern Shore at Hill Field House.

Adams is leading Morgan State in scoring (12.6 points per game) and assists (3.1), and despite her slight 5-foot-5 frame, she is third on the team in rebounds (5.1). Her build earned her the nickname “Tiny.”

Beasley said that although Adams has played well throughout the season, Morgan State can?t compete for a MEAC championship on just her play alone.

“For a freshman, Adams has done a super job,” Beasley said. “As a team, we go as she goes and that?s a lot of weight to place on the shoulders of a first-year player. Hopefully, that sends a message to the upperclassmen.”

Among her top performances, Adams scored eight of the Bears? 10 points in overtime and finished with a career-high 20 points in a 65-61 win at league rival Hampton.

Adams said she has enjoyed her freshman season so far, but admits the season has put a strain on her body.

“The college game is much more physical, so I?ve had to work on becoming stronger,” Adams said. “But there is not many other differences in the game from high school.”
