The United States has surpassed 20 million cases of the coronavirus.
The country eclipsed the grim milestone on Jan. 1, according to the Johns Hopkins University’s coronavirus tracker. That total is nearly double the number of India’s cases, which has the second-most globally. Aside from the U.S. and India, only Brazil, with 7.6 million cases, has eclipsed 4 million COVID-19 diagnoses since the pandemic began.
It took 292 days for the U.S. to reach its first 10 million cases, and only 54 more days to double it, according to CNN.
The U.S. has seen an uptick in cases in recent weeks, even as vaccine roll out and distribution began. There were never more than 2 million cases diagnosed in a given month from January through October. However, in November and December, there were more than 10 million cases.
The country is on the verge of reaching 350,000 coronavirus-related deaths, with December being the deadliest month of the pandemic nationwide, accounting for more than 77,500 deaths.
