Thursday was the biggest day ever for Obamacare, with a record 670,000 people signing up for coverage, President Obama said during his end of the year press conference Friday afternoon.
Signups were also high earlier in the week, as Monday and Tuesday saw more than 700,000 total signups.
The surge in signups on healthcare.gov, used by 38 states and the District of Columbia for getting Obamacare, comes ahead of a major deadline to get healthcare coverage on Jan. 1. The administration on Thursday extended the deadline for people to sign up to get coverage by Jan. 1 from Dec. 15 to midnight Dec. 19.
Obama issued a vociferous defense of his signature domestic achievement during the press conference, saying that for the first time more than 90 percent of Americans have healthcare coverage.
President-elect Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress plan to repeal the law quickly next month after Trump assumes the presidency.
