For Northern Virginia’s boys basketball coaches, the offseason is usually filled with rumor and innuendo. Which coaches have been fired or are retiring? Who is up for what job opening.
But things have been quiet since the basketball season ended last month. Potomac coach Kendall Hayes and Episcopal coach Tim Jaeger have announced their resignations. But so far those are the only changes. It’s an unprecedented run of stability for a profession where turnover is the norm. But a big reason for the lack of movement is that there were 10 coaching changes at Northern Virginia public and private schools last season alone and 11 the season before. Also, there isn’t a new public school opening in either Prince William or Fairfax county for the first time in three years.
“It definitely has been pretty slow so far,” said Washington-Lee coach Bobby Dobson. “But hopefully that’s a good thing and it means everyone has their programs situated and headed in the right direction. It isn’t like this very often.”
