A woman released from an Indonesian prison was arrested by Chicago police Wednesday, seven years after she allegedly assisted in her mother’s murder, according to the Justice Department.
Heather Mack, 26, and her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, 28, allegedly killed Mack’s mother in Bali, Indonesia, in 2014 on vacation. Seven years later, Mack was released from her Indonesian prison and went home to the United States, where she was arrested at the O’Hare International Airport, according to the department.

Court documents state on Aug. 12, 2014, Mack and Schaefer allegedly worked together to kill Mack’s mother, Sheila Von Weise, while she and her daughter were on vacation in Bali. After allegedly killing Von Weise, the two then placed her body inside a suitcase and loaded it into a taxi trunk. The two were then prosecuted and convicted in Indonesia in 2015, with Mack sentenced to 10 years in prison and Schaefer sentenced to 18 years.
While Schaefer is still imprisoned in Indonesia, Mack was released from prison on Oct. 29 and was arrested by U.S. authorities on Nov. 3 on charges of allegedly planning the murder with Schaefer inside the U.S.
Court documents reveal Mack asked Ryan Bibbs, Schaefer’s cousin, if he knew anyone who would kill her mother in exchange for money. Bibbs pleaded guilty in December 2016 to one count of conspiracy to commit foreign murder of a U.S. national.
