Rogers changes outlook

The transformation began long ago and Carlos Rogers has made it clear that he wants to stick around Washington for more than another season. He stressed that again this week.

And he admits that this outlook has surprised him. At one point this offseason Rogers had hoped for a trade. But since meeting with the new coaching staff and going through offseason workouts, that has changed.

“I thought I wasn’t going to be back here next year,” he said. “But I’m here and here to stay another year at least. After that, everything else will settle itself out. Being with new coaches and the staff we have and what’s going on, if I can play in this system for the rest of my career I would love to.”

Rogers’ phsyical style should sit well with aggressive new coordinator Jim Haslett. But there’s no reason for the Redskins to commit to a player whom the new staff has not seen in action. Which we also said about linebacker Rocky McIntosh.

One thing we do know: Rogers said he will sign his tendered contract offer before training camp (he does not have to sign by June 15 as some restricted free agents do).

And he said playing in the final year of a contract won’t weigh on him mentally.

“I really don’t think about it,” Rogers said. “You don’t go into the game thinking about a contract. You think about making a play or not getting beat. If I go into it thinking about a contract and that I need to be doing this so I can get paid more, or I shouldn’t have did that, you’ll be screwed up throughout the whole year … . Other people worry about it more than me.”
