President Trump and first lady Melania Trump are working with Sweden in attempt to free rapper A$AP Rocky.
The 30-year-old, whose birth name is Rakim Mayers, has been jailed in Sweden since July 2 after a street fight in Stockholm. Rapper Kanye West, reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, and others have spoken out against the arrest, claiming he is being held unjustly.
When asked about the situation on Friday, Trump told reporters at the White House that he has been called by many in the African American community about the arrest and indicated that his administration has already started speaking with Sweden about the incident.
“I personally don’t know A$AP Rocky, but I can tell you that he has tremendous support from the African American community in this country,” he said. “And when I say African American, I think I can really say from everybody in this country, because we’re all one.”
“I have been called by so many people asking me to help A$AP Rocky, actually the one who knew about A$AP Rocky was our first lady,” Trump added before asking Melania Trump if she wanted to give a statement.
“Well, I’ll be working with the State Department, and we hope to get him home soon,” Melania Trump told reporters.
A$AP Rocky, known for hit songs like Wild for the Night and L$D, claims that he acted in aggressive self-defense after being followed and attacked by several men. His attorney has asserted that the prison conditions in Sweden were “horrific.”
Swedish Ambassador to the United States Karin Olofsdotter said reports that his prison conditions are inhumane are not accurate and denied that his arrest was racially motivated.
Kardashian West thanked the Trump administration on Friday for its efforts and “commitment to justice.”
Thank you @realDonaldTrump , @SecPompeo, Jared Kushner & everyone involved with the efforts to Free ASAP Rocky & his two friends. Your commitment to justice reform is so appreciated ???? https://t.co/Ym1Rzo5Z6c

Trump tweeted about the rapper Friday afternoon, noting that he just consulted with Kanye West on the matter.
“Just spoke to @KanyeWest about his friend A$AP Rocky’s incarceration. I will be calling the very talented Prime Minister of Sweden to see what we can do about helping A$AP Rocky. So many people would like to see this quickly resolved!” Trump said.
