Conservative commentator Mark Levin accused Facebook of “pushing a leftwing agenda” after censoring his posts.
“Facebook has just sent us this message. It’s a clear effort at censorship. Every link I post is from a legitimate source,” Levin tweeted Monday morning, accompanied by a screenshot of a warning message saying the page shared “false news.”
“But because so many people are seeing what I’m posting, and we’re within weeks of the election it’s clear that Facebook is trying to influence the election’s outcome. It’s also clear Facebook is pushing a leftwing agenda. I’ll address this tonight on radio,” Levin added.
The warning message reads, “Your Page has reduced distributions and other restrictions because of repeated sharing of false news. People will also be able to see if a Page has a history of sharing false news.”
Facebook has launched a plan to curb misinformation spread on its platform, including working with independent third-party fact-checkers.
“False news is harmful to our community, it makes the world less informed, and it erodes trust. It’s not a new phenomenon, and all of us — tech companies, media companies, newsrooms, teachers — have a responsibility to do our part in addressing it,” Facebook says on its website of how it’s working to stop misinformation.
Beyond conservative media figures pointing to instances of censorship from Silicon Valley, lawmakers have also condemned Facebook and other companies for suppression.
“Google, Facebook, and Twitter, okay, they’re the tech oligarchs, they’re tech tyrants,” Rep. Devin Nunes said this summer.
“There’s very few in the news media that are actually trying to get the facts out there,“ Nunes added. “When you have 92% of the searches going through Google, you might have a problem because when you plug that content into those three giant tech companies, it’s really starting to have an influence and an effect on the politics in this country.”
Facebook did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
