President Obama Wednesday said Americans should not be alarmed by a terrorism threat made against movie theaters, downplaying the danger as Sony Pictures announced a decision to cancel the planned release of a comedy about a plot to assassinate the leader of North Korea.
“For now, my recommendation would be, ‘Go to the movies,’” Obama said Wednesday in an interview with ABC News.
The movie, scheduled for a Christmas Day release, was pulled after theaters told Sony they would not show the feature.
Hackers that administration officials have traced to North Korea had threatened to launch a Sept. 11-style attack against theaters showing the film.
However, the president said his administration took the issue of cyberattacks very seriously and would alert the public if officials identified a “serious and credible” threat.
