Take 5 for July 1 to 3

Raspberry Brothers Present ‘The Terminator’ at the Arlington Cinema N Drafthouse, Saturday Fans of the old “Mystery Science Theater 3000” should get a kick out of this. The Raspberry Brothers screen popular movies, and make live, humorous comments. Kind of like when you watch movies with your friends on your couch at home.

On Saturday, catch the comedy group’s take on “The Terminator” at the Arlington Cinema N Drafthouse.

“You’re not suppose to do that?” said Jerm Pollet, the Raspberry Brothers founder, on talking in a movie theater. “Then let’s do that.”

Jerm — short for Jeremy — started this idea of doing live comedic commentary of films in Austin in 2000. After a move to New York in 2008, he recruited fellow writers and commentators. The Raspberry Brothers have now performed in New York, D.C., Philly, New Jersey and at numerous festivals.

A Raspberry Brothers show is more than just a couple of guys winging it, ragging on a ridiculous film. It’s carefully crafted to keep the jokes sharp, and to keep them coming. Jerm likens it to writing a new script for each film.

“It really is a lot of work,” he said, adding that Michael Austin will join him in Arlington.

The Raspberry Brothers have a number of films in their repertoire. “The Terminator” lends itself to humor for its lack foresight of the future. Plus the fact that star Arnold Schwarzenegger has been back in the news the past few months.

“Any movie that takes itself too seriously is ripe for mocking,” Jerm said.
