As of Monday morning, President Obama and the White House had no comment on the late Saturday night bombing in New York that injured 29 people, even as the FBI said it was looking for a suspect of Afghan descent.
Late Saturday, the White House released a statement saying only that Obama was aware of the bombing.
“The president has been apprised of the explosion in New York City, the cause of which remains under investigation,” the White House said. “The president will be updated as additional information becomes available.”
Sunday night, a pool report said Obama spoke at a fundraiser for 10 minutes, but made “no news” and made “no mention to [the] Saturday explosion in New York.”
The New York Post reported that Obama’s motorcade even drove past the site of the Saturday bombing in New York, but has made no public mention of the incident.
Monday morning, however, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said a statement from Obama would be coming sometime on Monday.
In the meantime, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have called it a terrorist attack. On Sunday, Clinton released a statement saying she condemned the “apparent terrorist attacks” in New York, as well as another explosion in New Jersey and a stabbing in Minnesota.
“Law enforcement officials are working to identify who was behind the attacks in New York and New Jersey and we should give them the support they need to finish the job and bring those responsible to justice — we will not rest until that happens,” she said.
Trump blamed “stupid” leaders in the U.S. for allowing people who intend to harm Americans into the country, and said he would stop immigration once in the White House.
“We can’t let any more people into this country,” Trump said.
