Kari Lake holding ’emergency press conference’ after burglary at rival’s headquarters

Kari Lake, the Republican nominee for Arizona governor, is holding an “emergency press conference” Thursday afternoon.

The topic was not clear in the press release announcing the event, but it does follow police arresting a suspect after a burglary this week at the Phoenix campaign headquarters of Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, the Democratic nominee for governor. The suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Daniel Mota Dos Reis, who was booked on one count of Third-Degree Burglary, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police said several items were taken during the break-in, and have since been returned to the victims.

The press conference is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. local time. The Washington Examiner will have a livestream here when it is available.

PHOENIX POLICE ARREST SUSPECT FOLLOWING HOBBS CAMPAIGN BREAK-IN: REPORT

Hobbs released a statement from campaign manager Nicole DeMont about the break-in, noting that Hobbs and her staff “have faced hundreds of death threats and threats of violence over the course of this campaign” and accusing Lake and her allies of “spreading dangerous misinformation and inciting threats against anyone they see fit.”

Security camera footage reportedly captured the theft.

Hobbs’s campaign released to the media some photos of a suspect in the break-in and burglary, showing what appears to be a man wearing a short-sleeved shirt, shorts, and a backpack. The face was blurred out by FOX 10 Phoenix.

Lake has gone on the offensive, sharing a clip of Hobbs declining to speak further on the break-in after the arrest was announced Thursday. “AFTER accusing my team of coordinating a Watergate style break-in of her office, Katie Hobbs has now flip-flopped and DOES NOT want to talk about the crime,” she said in a tweet. “This comes AFTER arrest was made and NO political motivation confirmed.”

Lake, who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump, is leading Hobbs by 4 1/2 percentage points, according to the polling average presented by RealClearPolitics.

Hobbs has refused to face off against Lake in a debate, claiming Lake is “not interested in having substantive, in-depth conversations about the issues that matter.” Lake, who has made election integrity a key focus of her campaign, has scorned her as a coward in response.
