Former McCain aide: Late senator would have picked a Hispanic woman to succeed him

John McCain’s former campaign manager said the late Arizona senator did not disclose who he would have wanted to be his successor in the Senate, but that it’s possible it would have been a minority.

“It’s hard to say. You know, he’s always been someone who has encouraged participation in politics, especially in the Republican Party with minorities and women,” Rick Davis said Monday during a news conference. “I think a Hispanic woman probably would have been his pick for a successor, if he had lived long enough to have the opportunity.”

“It’s just too sad to say what that would have looked like, because he never got that far,” he added.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said he is waiting until after McCain’s burial to appoint someone to fill the Senate seat.

Cindy McCain, McCain’s wife of more than 37 years, and former Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., are among those being discussed as potential appointees.

“I’m not going to address that at all,” Davis said when asked if Cindy McCain would replace her husband in the Senate.

John McCain, 81, died Saturday, a little more than a year after being diagnosed with brain cancer.
