Walt Disney World Resort announced Wednesday it would earmark 80 acres of its land in Florida to provide upwards of 1,300 units of affordable housing in Orange County.
“The development will offer residents a variety of home choices that are affordable and attainable, located in close proximity to schools and the new and expanding Flamingo Crossings Town Center retail and dining complex,” Disney’s press release read. “It will offer a variety of amenities to foster a strong community.”
The plan is still in the early stages, and the housing will be constructed by a third-party developer. There is no anticipated deadline for the complex yet.

“We are invested in working together with our community to solve complex issues,” said Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle. “The lack of affordable housing is affecting many people across our country, including right here in Central Florida. With this initiative, we’re lending a hand to make a real and meaningful impact in our community by tapping into the best of our company’s strengths. This is the right opportunity and the right time to take action.”
In a previous interview with the Washington Examiner, Rep. Angie Nixon, a Democrat from Jacksonville, confirmed Florida’s housing issue.
“No one is calling my office talking about [critical race theory] or book banning,” Nixon said. “What people are calling my office about is property insurance increasing.”
Florida’s average home insurance cost for a $300,000 home is $3,600, which is about $1,300 more than the national average, according to Insurance.com.
