Washingtonian has named Montgomery County Council President Valerie Ervin among “Washington’s 100 Most Powerful Women.”
Ervin, D-Silver Spring, is Montgomery’s first black woman council member. She heads the council’s Education Committee and sits on the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee as well as her duties as council president.
In explaining why Ervin makes the list, Washingtonian‘s October issue cites her work on the county’s budget and controversial legislation curbing unions’ collective bargaining rights.
Ervin called the council’s work on the fiscal 2012 budget “a watershed moment.”
“We worked together to create a blueprint for addressing the county’s long-term structural challenges,” she said.
Other women featured include Supreme Court justices and top business leaders.
