Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie urged President Trump’s campaign to make some significant changes if he wants to catch up to Joe Biden before Election Day.
Christie, a Republican, said that there is still time for Trump to improve his polling against the presumptive Democratic nominee but warned that the president is going to need to make some changes if he wants to sell his reelection to voters.
“He is losing. And if he doesn’t change course, both in terms of the substance of what he’s discussing and the way that he approaches the American people, then he will lose. There’s no question that while these national polls are less significant in terms of the raw numbers, the trend is obvious,” Christie said.
“The trend is moving toward Joe Biden when Joe Biden hasn’t said a word,” he continued. “Joe Biden’s hiding in the basement and not saying anything. No discredit to the vice president. If you’re winning without doing anything, why do anything? The president has to change course here.”
Christie, who lost to Trump in the Republican primary in 2016, called the president the “underdog” in November’s election despite the historic success of incumbent politicians. He advised Trump to make “fundamental changes” to how he addresses voters to make a coherent pitch as to why he deserves four more years in the Oval Office.
“There’s no doubt the president’s an underdog. He’s more of an underdog today than he was a week ago,” he said. “There’s 128 days left, as was said by Nate Silver. There’s still a lot of time to go here. President Dukakis, as I said last week, was up over Vice President Bush in 1988 at this time. So, there’s still a lot of time to go, but there has to be some fundamental changes that need to be made by the president and his team.”
“If they don’t do it, they’re in big trouble,” he added.
Last week, a poll from Fox News showed Trump losing to Biden in the historically conservative states of Georgia and Texas.
