OT Garcia, LB Rowson also join growing list of defectors

Quarterback Danny O’Brien has left the Maryland football program, the school confirmed on Monday. Also leaving are starting offensive tackle Max Garcia and part-time starting linebacker Mario Rowson.

“I’m disappointed in Danny,” Maryland coach Randy Edsall said in a statement. “Danny told me he’s not committed to our program, that he’s not ‘all in.’ I want what’s best for our players. Danny Wants a fresh start elsewhere. I wish him well.”

With the most recent defections, Maryland has lost 12 players since the end of their 2-10 season and 24 overall since Edsall was hired 13 months ago.

With the departure of sophomore O’Brien, the 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year, C.J. Brown takes over as the starter. He is the lone quarterback with significant experience, starting five games last fall. Other quarterbacks on the roster are freshmen James Joseph and Troy Jones. Two quarterbacks signed earlier this month, Perry Hills (Pittsburgh) and Caleb Rowe (Greer, S.C.).

Garcia, a sophomore, started all 12 games last fall and is the second starting tackle to leave the program since the end of the year. R.J. Dill departed last month with a year of eligibility remaining.

“Max showed great promise,” Edsall said in the statement. “But after two seasons in College Park, Max is still homesick. He wants to transfer to a school closer to home [Norcross, Ga.] so his family can see him play.”

Rowson, a redshirt freshman, made four starts last fall. He had 27 tackles and one sack.

“Mario wants to play defensive back. Trouble is, we see Mario as a linebacker,” Edsall said. “I wish Mario well, where ever he decides to play.”
