Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump’s time in Washington, D.C., may be starting to wear on them as friends say they cannot get over the vitriol the city has stung them with.
They are in a new town that “punctures their self-esteem on a daily basis,” a New York friend told Vanity Fair.
Several associates of the couple and West Wing staffers revealed to the magazine the couple is struggling to adjust to life in Washington, D.C. – a city that only gave four percent support to President Trump in the 2016 race.
Washington veterans note the two’s high-profile role in the White House has not necessarily translated to relevancy in their daily life around their home in Washington’s Kalorama neighborhood.
“What is off-putting about them is they do not grasp their essential irrelevance,” a Washington veteran said. “They think they are special.”
Their presence in the White House is met with mockery and scorn, even among Trump’s most loyal allies. According to one West Wing adviser, Ivanka is often referred to as “princess royal” among staffers.
“Excuse me,” a former Trump adviser told Vanity Fair. “This is not a royal family, and she’s not the princess royal.”
Other associates of the couple told the magazine the two view their time in D.C. as “sacrificial.”
Rumors have persisted that the two are growing increasingly disappointed with their life in Washington and have contemplated moving back to New York City. According to some reports, the couple is considering a return at the end of the school year in 2018.
“When they decide it’s more important to protect their own and their children’s reputations than it is to defend their indefensible father’s, that’s a sign the end is near,” an influential Republican donor told Vanity Fair.
Those close to the couple say they have not planned that far in advance.
