Murphy attacks Rubio for seeking re-election

Rep. Patrick Murphy slammed Sen. Marco Rubio Wednesday morning for deciding to run for re-election in the fall.

Murphy, a Democrat, was seeking to replace Rubio in the Senate after he had decided not to run for re-election following his failed presidential campaign.

Rubio confirmed to the Washington Examiner on Wednesday that he will run for re-election, two days before the deadline to file paperwork.

Rubio “abandoned his constituents and now he’s treating them like a consolation prize,” Murphy said in a statement Wednesday morning.

“Rubio is proving he is only out for himself,” Murphy said. “Florida is ready for another senator like Bob Graham and Bill Nelson, who is committed to doing this job.”

A Quinnipiac University poll of Florida voters released Wednesday shows Rubio leading Murphy, 47 percent to 40 percent.
