Local spotlight for Thursday

WOMEN’S RIGHTS

As women’s issues again make headlines for American candidates and female voters across the country take note, it’s important to reflect on how far we’ve come. Women’s Equality Day celebrates 92 years since women claimed the right to vote. Today six women serve as governors, and 90 are voting members of the House or Senate.

Women suffragists saw voting as a means to improve women’s lives, according to panelists scheduled to discuss progress since 1920 at the National Archives (700 Pennsylvania Ave. NW). Page Harrington, the executive director of the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum, will moderate the panel, which will include Dr. Joy Kinard, Central District manager of National Capital Parks-East; Jennifer Krafchik, assistant director and director of collections at Sewall-Belmont; and Dr. Jennifer Lawless, director of the Women & Politics Institute at American University.

INTERNATIONAL CLUB

Eat, pray and love your way through Fiji, Samoa and Bali without taking a step outside the District. In partnership with the International Club of DC, the Phillips Collection (1600 21st St. NW) will host an International Art and Language Soiree starting at 6 p.m.

The evening has two parts. At 6 and 7 p.m. you can tour the paintings of Louis Eilshemius, John La Farge and Maurice Sterne. All three painters were widely traveled, and the tour will focus on their depictions of exotic locales.

Then at 6 and 8 p.m. you can flaunt your French, Italian, Spanish, German and Russian language skills at a gathering in Tryst at the Phillips cafe between 6 and 8 p.m. The International Club’s native language speakers will be on hand to help. Bonne chance!

OUTDOOR MUSIC

As the summer comes to a close few things are better than enjoying a drink and listening to music on a rooftop at the end of the day. Accordingly, the Art Soiree is hosting another Rooftop Sunset event above the Beacon Hotel Sky Bar (1615 Rhode Island Ave. NW).

Zero Day, a new local indie rock band whose name describes cyberattacks, will play during the event. The band includes singer-songwriter David Emerick, guitarist and singer Giovanni Hernandez, bassist Will G. and drummer Frank Provenzano. DJ Fotifo will also perform throughout the evening. A former music producer, DJ Fotifo mixes sounds using computer controllers and software.

Tickets are $10, and more information about Rooftop Sunset and other upcoming events is available at theartsoiree.com. The event starts at 5 p.m.
