WASHINGTON (AP) — The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum is revisiting an exhibit from 20 years ago about black immigrants in Washington and notions of race and ethnicity amid changes in Washington’s demographics.
On Friday, the museum will host a daylong symposium to explore past research and more recent changes in Washington’s population.
The museum is looking back on the issues raised in its 1994 exhibit, “Black Mosaic: Community, Race and Ethnicity among Black Immigrants in Washington, D.C.” Curators say it was the first exhibit to document and examine perceptions and realities of race, nationality and ethnicity of black urban immigrants.
The museum presented the stories African-descendant immigrants from Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean who made their homes in Washington. Now, experts will consider changes among those immigrant communities.
