Hillary Clinton: ‘Republicans are against nearly every human right’

DES MOINES — Hillary Clinton on Friday declared that Republicans have been opponents of “nearly every human right” as she makes a final campaign swing ahead of the year’s first presidential nomination contest.

“You know, Republicans are against nearly every human right, and every civil right, and every gay right, and every voting right that you can name,” Clinton told the crowd of a few hundred in a gym at Grand View University here.

The former first lady and secretary of state went on to describe her support for legal abortion, gay marriage, comprehensive immigration reform, voting right, and for a variety of economic ideas meant to appeal to the middle class.

Locked in a tight race with Sen. Bernie Sanders despite once being seen as inevitable, Clinton has been trying to regain her footing in the race.

The contrasts she presented with Republicans were clearly aimed at appealing to young voters, black voters, Hispanics and women.

The idea is to try and cobble together the coalition of voters that helped propel President Obama to victory in the 2008 general election after defeating her in the primaries.

She has wholeheartedly embraced the legacy of Obama on his handling of the economy, healthcare and Wall Street reform, and argued that the socialist Sanders would uproot the legacy with his more radical proposals.

“We’re on the right path, we just have to stick with it,” Clinton said.
