North Korea has fired three ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan, according to the South Korea military.
The Sea of Japan is a sea that is bordered by Japan, North Korea, Russia and South Korea.
According to reports, the missiles were launched early Tuesday morning from the western city of Hwangju. They flew more than 300 miles to reach the very edge of South Korea.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles flew far enough to reach any part of South Korea, including the south port city of Busan where the U.S. Navy has a base. They are reported to have been Scud missiles.
In recent months, North Korea has test-fired a series of ballistic missiles in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Tensions have been high between the two neighbor countries since Pyongyang carried out its fourth nuclear test in January.
