There is no place for Donald Trump supporters in the liberal world of academia.
According to a new poll from the William F. Buckley, Jr. Program at Yale, 4 out of 5 (or around 80 percent) of college students said their professors “generally prefer” Hillary Clinton for president.
The survey showed that students also prefer Clinton to Trump (42 percent to 19 percent), however, a significant amount of students (17 percent) said they prefer Libertarian Gary Johnson to both major party candidates. Another 7 percent of students said they prefer Green Party candidate Jill Stein, while 8 percent were undecided and another 8 percent said they wouldn’t vote.
The few college professors who do openly support Trump are often met with outrage and backlash from students.
For example, Joseph Guzman, an assistant professor at Michigan State University, is also a co-chair of Trump’s Michigan campaign and a member of his National Hispanic Advisory Council. After someone spotted Guzman in a photo at a Trump rally, students created fliers with the headline, “Meet your professor!” and distributed them around campus in an attempt to shame the professor for his views.
“It’s against the First Amendment and the precepts of the Constitution,” Guzman told the Detroit News. “That’s the sad part. Students are taught to be intolerant. There’s a lot of shaming that goes on because people want to suppress free speech and free thought.”
Detroit News columnist Ingrid Jacques found the students’ response ironic, considering the “safe space” movement on college campuses.
“Apparently everyone deserves a safe space, except for conservatives and Trump supporters,” she said.
