Campbell: M’m, m’m, good

College football prospects abound in talent-rich Prince George’s County. For many, however, they don’t emerge until they let go of their hoop dreams.

That was the case for Forestville’s Devonte Campbell. When the 6-foot, 205-pounder showed up for basketball practice three years ago, coach O.J. Johnson — a former linebacker at the University of Virginia — knew that Campbell was destined for a Division I football scholarship, even though Campbell had never played the sport.

Three years later, Campbell is the state’s No. 3-rated prospect (rivals.com). He is 6-foot-2, 235 pounds and plays linebacker, tight end and wide receiver. This season he has 25 receptions for 885 yards (35.4 yards per catch average) and nine touchdowns, drawing comparison to former Maryland All-American and current San Francisco 49er Vernon Davis.

“He’s a monster,” Potomac coach Eric Knight said of Campbell. “He’s just got unusual talent with that big body and speed. He’s got a chance to play on Sundays.”

In a game against Potomac two weeks ago, Campbell wrecked the Wolverines’ playoff hopes as he caught five passes for 200 yards.

On Saturday, when Forestville (6-3) plays host to Largo (3-6), it will be a tune-up for the Class 1A playoffs, where Campbell will take his act to a larger stage.

“I’m the biggest person in my family, both sides,” said Campbell. “God just blessed me. I’m lucky to be where I am right now.”

It’s a long way from his first football practice as a sophomore when Campbell put his pants on backwards. That season, lacking aggressiveness, Campbell played in only four games. But in the offseason, his rare physical gifts landed him an invitation to the Elite Combine, where he drew raves.

“We had a doctor from the University of Maryland at our last game,” said Forestville coach Charles Harley. “He took one look at Devonte and said, ‘That kid is ready right now.’”

Desired Devonte

» Campbell is considering offers from Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Maryland, Penn State, Pittsburgh, and Illinois.

» Campbell still plays basketball. He was Forestville’s second-leading scorer last season.

» Campbell combines with Maryland-bound Kevin Dorsey (6-foot-3, 185 pounds) to give Forestville QB Kevin Dickerson an inviting pair of targets.
