Double rainbow appears over DC

A double rainbow graced the sky over Washington, D.C., to cap the start of the week.

On what was otherwise a cloudy, rainy day, photos of the colorful weather phenomenon were shared by Twitter users Monday evening.

While some observers only saw one rainbow, others were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a double rainbow.

D.C. is no stranger to double rainbows. One appeared above the White House last August, documented by awestruck journalists in the vicinity.

A rainbow is a multicolored optical illusion, which appears in the form of an arc, which is created when light hits water droplets. According to National Geographic, a double rainbow occurs when light is reflected twice in raindrops, resulting in a second arc with its color scheme reversed.
