Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is not at all amused that the chair of the Democratic National Committee suggested recently that a private citizen and GOP fundraiser may or may not be a Nazi sympathizer.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., published an email last week criticizing the 2016 Republican presidential candidate for agreeing to appear at a fundraiser hosted by Texas businessman and avid artifact collector Harlan Crow.
Crow has in his collection an array of artifacts from previous world conflicts, including World War II. He also has in his possession several artifacts left over from the reigns of Communist dictators, including Joseph Stalin and Mao Tse-tung. Crow’s diverse collection also includes Nazi paraphernalia. For Wasserman Schultz, these last items were reason enough to insinuate last week that Rubio rubs shoulders with likely Nazis.
Rubio appeared displeased this week with the Florida congresswoman’s heavy handed hinting.
“I was outraged because this is a private citizen, an individual who participates in the political process,” Rubio said this week in a Fox News interview. “Anyone who knows him for two seconds knows he’s not a Nazi sympathizer.”
Wasserman Schultz’s anti-Rubio email listed the parts of Crow’s collection that offended her.
“Today, as the sun is setting for Yom Kippur,” she wrote, “Sen. Marco Rubio will hold a fundraiser in a home that features two paintings by Adolf Hitler, a signed copy of Hitler’s autobiography, Mein Kampf, and a cabinet full of place settings and linens used by the Nazi leader.”
“Holding an event in a house featuring the artwork and signed autobiography of a man who dedicated his life to extinguishing the Jewish people is the height of insensitivity and indifference,” the note added.
Unimpressed, the Florida senator in his Fox interview pivoted, blasting Wasserman Schultz for supporting the White House’s nuclear deal with Iran. Leaders in Teheran have made their dislike of Israel no secret, as many of the country’s chief officials have fantasized publicly about wiping out Jews.
“She is in favor of, and voted for, and is an enthusiastic supporter of this deal with Iran that will give the Iranian regime the opportunity to do things like wipe Israel off the face of the earth,” Rubio said. “That’s what really matters, but she doesn’t care about that.”
The senator predicted that Wasserman Schultz won’t walk back her attack.
“Don’t expect an apology,” he said. “They just move on and don’t feel like they’re accountable to anyone for it.”
