Police shoot, kill robbery suspect in Essex

Baltimore County police fatally shot a robbery suspect in Essex Wednesday morning.

The incident began around 8 a.m. when a man approached the Rite Aid in the 100 block of Back River Neck Road as employees were arriving to open the store.

The suspect had a handgun and ordered the workers inside, but one of the employees was able to get away and called 911, police said.

The suspect and the other employees went into the store where the suspect demanded money, according to police.

Officers arrived just as the man was leaving the store and he fled on foot.

An officer chased him and caught up with him about two blocks away in the 1500 block of Williams Avenue, police said. During a confrontation, the officer shot the suspect, and he died shortly thereafter at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital, police said.

The officer was not injured in the incident. Police had not released the identity of the suspect by press time.

Baltimore County has seen five officer-involved shootings this year, four of which were fatal.
