Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley say they plan to use a meeting with President Obama next week to reiterate their opposition to holding hearings or voting on any Supreme Court nomination from Obama.
“On Tuesday we will meet with the president at the White House,” McConnell and Grassley said in statement. “We look forward to reiterating to him directly that the American people will be heard and the next Supreme Court justice will be determined once the elections are complete and the next president has been sworn into office.”
“We welcome the opportunity to further discuss matters of mutual interest, like the drug epidemic that’s tearing communities apart across our country,” the senators added.
The White House insisted Thursday that the president will send a Supreme Court nominee to Congress, despite Senate leadership’s renewed position of not hearing any nominee.
Also Thursday, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval removed himself from consideration to serve on the high court. The GOP governor was floated as a possible nominee, but many Democrats were outraged and Sandoval said he was no longer interested about a day after the news leaked.
