Grammys ratings free-fall, could be lowest in award show’s history

The ratings for the 2021 Grammy Awards could be the lowest in the event’s history, according to early data.

The 63rd Grammys pulled in an average of 7.88 million viewers Sunday at 8 p.m. on CBS, according to Nielsen Live + Same Day data, with a 1.9 rating for adults age 18 to 49. The data does not consider West Coast viewing, which will likely be made available by Monday night or Tuesday.

In 2020, time zone-adjusted data garnered a 5.4 rating in the key demographic and 18.7 million viewers, Variety reported. In 2019, it drew a 5.6 rating and 19.9 million viewers.

BLACK LIVES MATTER ACTIVISTS TAKE STAGE AT GRAMMYS AND DEMAND ‘JUSTICE’ FROM BIDEN

The award show this year may have had low ratings, but it still sparked controversy, including when rappers Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion performed the song “WAP.” Some viewers sounded off on social media, expressing they were shocked the raunchy performance was aired on network television.

The Grammys also featured a Black Lives Matter-focused performance from rapper Lil Baby, during which Black Lives Matter activist Tamika Mallory demanded that President Biden provide racial “justice.”

“It’s a state of emergency. It’s been a hell of a year — hell for over 400 years. My people, it’s time we stand.” Mallory said during the performance. “It’s time we demand the freedom that this land promises. President Biden, we demand justice, equity, policy, and everything else that freedom encompasses, and to accomplish this, we don’t need allies. We need accomplices. It’s bigger than black and white. This is not a trend. This is our plight until freedom.”

Comedian Bill Burr was also slammed as “sexist” and “racist” over remarks and jokes he made while presenting during the show.
