House Republicans Wednesday requested telecom and tech companies preserve phone records and data of top Democrats in retaliation for the Jan. 6 investigative committee doing the same for Republicans.
A number of right-wing legislators who are top supporters of former President Donald Trump, including Republican Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Matt Gaetz of Florida, and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, requested telecom companies such as AT&T and Big Tech companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Apple preserve private and confidential data on prominent Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Vice President Kamala Harris, and members of “the Squad,” the group of left-wing members of the House.
The Democrat-led Jan. 6 committee asked telecom companies to preserve records from several Republican lawmakers involved in the “Stop the Steal” rally ahead of the Capitol attack, such as Biggs, Gaetz, and Greene.
“We are calling on companies to preserve the phone and communications records of Democrat representatives for future investigative use. It’s time the Far Left lives under the same rules and standards they impose,” said Biggs in a statement.

The Republicans say certain Democrats have played a role in encouraging violence or have supported illegal activities in the past, and therefore should be scrutinized in the same manner as Republican leaders.
The Jan. 6 investigation has led to new fears that congressional subpoenas and investigations will be weaponized in a partisan fashion.

Some Republicans, such as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, have even threatened telecom and technology companies for cooperating with the congressional investigation into the Jan. 6 riot, although the threat is viewed by lawyers as empty.
