Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) views the actions of President Barack Obama and his administration as not only a sign of “lawlessness,” but also as a sign of “profound, endemic corruption,” he told an audience on Wednesday morning.
Cruz was the featured guest at the Leadership Institute‘s monthly breakfast, where he talked about the grassroots movement that got him elected and what he believes is the extreme overreach of the executive branch.
The Texas Senator especially zeroed in on the administration’s response to the Internal Revenue Service targeting conservative groups. In the eight months since the information came to light, there have been no repercussions for those involved. And the investigation is being led by an Obama campaign donor, something Cruz sees as incredibly worrisome.
During his talk, Cruz referenced Obama’s recent interview with Bill O’Reilly, in which the President said there was not a “smidgen” of corruption involved in the IRS incident. Cruz agreed with the President, but not in the way Obama might have hoped.
“There is profound, endemic corruption,” Cruz told the audience.
Echoing a point made by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) earlier this week, Cruz denounced the Obama administration’s “lawlessness.” The Texan said it could be see in the lack of enforcement for immigration laws, drug laws and welfare laws. But the most obvious example to Cruz is Obamacare.
“The lawlessness with which Obamacare is being implemented is one of its most grotesque features,” Cruz said. “One of the things I’m most troubled about with this administration is a pattern of lawlessness where this President picks and chooses what laws to follow.”
The Senator stressed that Obama disregards the law of the land when it’s convenient for him, and implied that the President was acting like an absolute ruler. Cruz described Obama as “an academic socialist” mixed with “Chicago-style thuggery.”
Yet the President’s dismissal of and promise to go around Congress still hasn’t sullied Cruz’s optimism. The Texan — and many other Tea Party members — are still fighting to stop the Affordable Care Act from being fully implemented.
“I am convinced we are going to repeal Obamacare,” Cruz said.
