GOP congressman presents Jan. 6 rioter with flag flown over Capitol

A Republican congressman from Texas presented a convicted Jan. 6 rioter with a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol after the rioter was released from federal prison on Friday.

Rep. Louie Gohmert sought to honor Dr. Simone Gold for contributions to “public health, medical freedom and our God-given constitutional rights,” according to a press release from his office.

He called Gold a “patriot and an American hero” and said she was unjustly prosecuted by the Biden administration.

“After having her name and reputation shamefully dragged through the mud, the Biden administration’s DOJ threw her in prison for peacefully walking into the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and delivering a speech,” Gohmert said in the statement. “Dr. Gold is the definition of what a political prisoner looks like — something I never thought I’d see here in the United States of America.”

Gold, a COVID-19 vaccine skeptic and the leader of the group America’s Frontline Doctors, pleaded guilty in March to entering and remaining in a restricted building during the Capitol riot. She was sentenced to two months in prison in June.

Gold shared photos of her release on Twitter, including her embracing Gohmert. “We can never allow this miscarriage of justice to happen again,” she said.
