Two teenage girls charged in the fatal carjacking of a Washington, D.C., Uber Eats driver reportedly reached a plea deal with prosecutors on Monday.
The suspects, 13 and 15, were charged with the murder of 66-year-old Mohammad Anwar after they allegedly stole his car, crashed it, and Anwar was fatally ejected from the vehicle, video footage showed.
The deal would ensure that the two minors will not be held until they reach age 21 or be placed in a prison facility, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
Under D.C. law, the 13-year-old cannot be tried as an adult, but the attorney general’s office is allowed to petition for the older teenager to be transferred to adult court.
Criminal defense attorney Nikki Lotze previously told Fox 5 that she expects the suspects to be treated differently in the district because juveniles have a better chance at rehabilitation than adults.
Lotze predicted a plea agreement would involve admitting guilt and being placed in a youth shelter, home detention, or probation.
Judge Lynn Leibovitz, who has discussed the case with prosecutor Bonnie Lindemann, gave no indication that her office will try to transfer the 15-year-old’s case to adult court, according to a report by the Washington Post.
The next court date for the teenagers will be April 20 to discuss the status of the case.
Police say the suspects shocked Anwar, a Pakistani immigrant living in Virginia, with a stun gun and attempted to escape with his car while he clung to the driver’s side door to stop the carjacking attempt. Graphic video footage of the incident shows Anwar clinging to the car, followed by the crash, and later shows a man lying on the ground.

A spokesperson for Uber previously said they were grateful the suspects were arrested and expressed condolences for Anwar’s family.
“We are devastated by this tragic news and our hearts go out to Mohammad’s family during this difficult time,” the company said.
A GoFundMe, which closed on Saturday, raised over $1 million for Anwar’s family.
